Hello, I am Sam Hollier; an online safeguarding consultant offering bespoke support and guidance to young people, their parents and the professionals supporting them in their online worlds.
After more than 20 years as a DBS qualified youth worker, I set myself up in 2018 after achieving my MA in Advanced Child Protection. I am proud to offer more than internet safety and to take a move away from the blame game when it comes to choices made online.
I am a Level 3 BSL signer and am studying hard to become an interpreter so I can communicate this vital message across our communities.
This is not online safety, but empowerment with a genuine desire to make a difference to our young people in their online lives.
DIGITAL HEALTH CHECK
An interactive way to feel empowered online and become a conscious digital citizen
WHAT IS A DIGITAL HEALTH CHECK?
The aim of the session is to give children and young people the opportunity to safely think about what they do online using an
They look at their digital footprint, a hand of trust related to who they would talk to in moments of crisis, agencies that can offer help and alternatives to being online.
“It has opened my eyes more.
I didn’t realise how much I didn’t know.”
(Participant in health check, aged 15)
FOR ALL AGES
The Digital Health Check has been adapted to suit different age groups and has been run in primary schools, with teenagers in youth clubs and independently with small groups of young people.
The session is fully adaptable for any age and can be designed to be used with those with special education needs and disabilities (SEND), as well as with adults.
“As a parent I wanted my children to have all the tools they need to navigate the internet safely and they are a lot more confident with what they can do safely online.”
WHAT'S BEEN SAID ABOUT THE PROJECT?
Mrs Stace, Headteacher at Westfield Primary School said:
"The Digital Health Check was well received by the children in year 4,5 and 6 who enjoyed spending time with Sam exploring their digital footprint, avenues of support and how to feel more empowered online. The sessions were energetic and creative and gave information on internet safety and empowerment at the right level for the children."
YOUNG PEOPLE'S PROJECT
Supporting children and young people to feel able to say no online and to
speak to a trusted adult is the driving force behind the Empowerment Projects.
Each young person taking part will receive a box that they personalise
and keep all their work in so they can refer to it in times of need.
The box also contains items that aid as a distraction to the
online world with items that they can smell, taste and touch.
I cover issues including:
Sending nudes - why do people do it/ask for it and what the consequences are
Bullying - why does it happen and are you a bully?
Digital footprints - what do you share and how it is always with you
How to be safe and have an enjoyable online experience
What apps are you using? How are you using them? How are you being safe on them?
Online exploitation and signs to look out for that you or a friend may be at risk/being exploited.
PARENT AND PROFESSIONAL SESSIONS
I provide truly bespoke sessions when it comes to all things online which can be delivered in groups or one to one.
Once you have made contact, I will talk through your requirements and will develop a plan for you and your organisation. Once this is approved, I will go ahead to create a training session that meets your needs.
I have worked with counselling services, independent youth work services as well as schools and charities, supporting their clients and staff members to feel equipped to support the young people in their lives - be that professional or personal.
"[I have enjoyed] getting to understand social media and why it's so addictive. How to deal with it all."
(Participant in professional training)
"[I have a] better awareness of the risks for young people online. Strategies to support and protect my children online. Ways to discuss online safety with my kids."
